Washington Capitals vs. New York Islanders
The Washington Capitals and New York Islanders are set to renew their long-standing rivalry Sunday afternoon in Elmont, New York — and this meeting carries historic implications.
Nearly 38 years after their legendary quadruple-overtime “Easter Epic” in the 1987 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Capitals and Islanders find themselves at the center of another potential NHL milestone. This time, it’s all about Alex Ovechkin, who will attempt to break his tie with Wayne Gretzky as the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer.
Capitals Heating Up at the Right Time
The Washington Capitals (49-18-9, 107 points) come into this matchup having won 11 of their last 16 games. They most recently defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 5-3 on Friday, with Ovechkin scoring twice to tie Gretzky’s all-time mark of 894 goals. Washington also fell to the Carolina Hurricanes and beat the Blackhawks this past week. Up next, they’ll face the Hurricanes, Blue Jackets, and Islanders in a pivotal stretch.
Offensively, the Capitals are rolling. They’re averaging 3.62 goals per game and converting on 22.8% of their power play opportunities. Ovechkin leads the charge with 41 goals, Dylan Strome has dished out 50 assists, and Jakob Chychrun has registered a team-high 174 shots on goal.
Defensively, Washington is holding opponents to 2.68 goals per game and has killed off 81.3% of opposing power plays. In net, Charlie Lindgren has allowed 91 goals on 873 shots, while Logan Thompson has surrendered 105 goals on 1,172 shots faced.
Islanders Clinging to Playoff Hopes
The New York Islanders (33-32-10, 76 points) snapped a six-game losing skid on Friday with a 3-1 win over the Minnesota Wild. That victory keeps their faint playoff hopes alive as they chase the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. They’re currently five points behind the Montreal Canadiens, with crucial games against the Predators, Rangers, Flyers, and Blue Jackets looming.
The Isles have struggled offensively, averaging just 2.72 goals per game with a disappointing 12.7% power play efficiency. Anders Lee leads the team with 27 goals, Noah Dobson has tallied 28 assists, and Bo Horvat leads with 220 shots on net.
On the defensive side, New York is allowing 3.04 goals per game and has killed only 73.3% of power plays. Between the pipes, Semyon Varlamov has allowed 29 goals on 262 shots, while Ilya Sorokin — expected to start Sunday — has given up 151 goals on 1,583 shots.
Ovechkin’s Moment of Destiny
Friday night’s game in Washington was a spectacle, as Ovechkin tied Gretzky with goal No. 894 in front of a sellout crowd of 18,573 — and with Gretzky himself in attendance. After scoring in the first period and again on a third-period power play, Ovechkin respectfully bowed toward the NHL legend and Commissioner Gary Bettman.

Despite multiple chances late in the game to break the record, Ovechkin declined to pad his stats with an empty-netter, instead opting for a more meaningful moment. He remained on the bench while the Blackhawks pulled their goalie and later missed four shots in the final 78 seconds after Chicago scored.
Ovechkin now has 41 goals in just 60 games this season — an incredible run considering he missed 16 games earlier in the year due to a broken leg. Since returning on Dec. 28, he’s scored 26 times in 42 games and is riding a four-game goal streak heading into Sunday’s historic clash.
While Ovechkin has 44 career regular-season goals against the Islanders, he’s never scored on Sorokin — a stat that adds even more intrigue to this afternoon’s showdown.
