Cubs Look to Bounce Back Against A’s

The Chicago Cubs head to California’s capital looking to put Sunday’s meltdown behind them. Despite scoring six runs and tallying nine hits, the Cubs surrendered 14 hits and 10 runs to the Arizona Diamondbacks, including a crushing eight-run eighth inning that flipped a 6-2 lead into a 10-6 defeat.

The biggest concern? Starter Elijah Morgan recorded just two outs while giving up six earned runs, putting the bullpen in scramble mode early. Still, there were bright spots offensively—Seiya Suzuki, Kyle Tucker, and Dansby Swanson each went yard, continuing their strong early-season form. The Cubs did manage to steal a 4-3 win on Saturday, offering a glimpse of their potential when the pitching holds.

Kyle Tucker has been the heartbeat of the offense so far, clubbing two homers and driving in seven RBIs. He’ll look to stay hot as the Cubs turn to right-hander Ben Brown for the start. Brown struggled in his debut against the Dodgers on March 18, allowing three runs over just 2.2 innings. A repeat performance could spell trouble against a motivated A’s squad.

A New Era Begins

While the Cubs are looking to rebound, the Oakland Athletics are preparing for a historic night.

Monday marks the official beginning of the A’s Sacramento era, as they host their first-ever MLB game at Sutter Health Park. The sold-out crowd of 14,014—overflowing a venue built for 10,624—will witness a new chapter in franchise history.

Starting for the A’s is right-hander Joey Estes, a California native who will have the honor of throwing the first pitch in Sacramento’s major league debut. Estes went 7-9 with a 5.01 ERA last season but showed promising control with a 1.23 WHIP. He’ll need to channel that potential tonight—especially after his spring struggles (7.56 ERA) and a rough outing against the Cubs last September, when he allowed six runs on nine hits in just over an inning.

Offensively, the A’s are hoping to find consistency. They went 2-2 in Seattle to open the year, getting excellent work from their rotation—just three earned runs allowed across 23.2 innings. Tyler Soderstrom was the offensive spark, hitting three homers in the series, while Brent Rooker and others chipped in with timely blasts.

But Sunday’s 2-1 loss to the Mariners exposed their offensive limitations again. They’ll need more run support moving forward, particularly against a Cubs lineup that has shown flashes of power despite road-weary legs.

The Cubs have shown they can score, but they’ll need more reliability from the mound. Meanwhile, the A’s boast solid starting pitching but must find a way to string together runs more consistently. Monday’s matchup isn’t just a game—it’s a moment in MLB history, and both clubs have something to prove.

Projected Starters:

  • Cubs: Ben Brown (0-1, 6.75 ERA)
  • A’s: Joey Estes (0-0, 0.00 ERA in 2024, 5.01 ERA in 2023)

First pitch: 10:05 PM ET at Sutter Health Park, Sacramento, CA
