Starting Pitching: Edge Goes to Arizona
Arizona hands the ball to left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez, who is entering the 2025 season with something to prove. After signing a four-year, $80 million deal last offseason, Rodriguez’s debut campaign in the desert was derailed by injury. He posted a 5.04 ERA across just 50 innings in 2024, a small sample size that doesn’t reflect the pitcher Arizona hoped to acquire.
However, Rodriguez’s spring training performance was encouraging. He struck out over 32% of batters faced and recorded a sparkling 1.93 FIP, while showing increased velocity and improved health. The 31-year-old looks more like the reliable mid-rotation arm Arizona envisioned, carrying a career 4.08 ERA and 3.89 FIP into this year.
His track record against the Cubs’ lineup is solid. Of the few Chicago hitters with experience against Rodriguez—namely Dansby Swanson, Kyle Tucker, and Justin Turner—they’ve managed just a 4-for-27 line with nine strikeouts.
Question Marks for Boyd and the Cubs
Opposing Rodriguez is veteran southpaw Matthew Boyd, making his first start as a Cub. Boyd, now 34, has struggled to stay healthy in recent years, failing to surpass 15 appearances in a season since 2019. While he posted a 2.72 ERA across limited innings last year, projection models peg him closer to a 4.00 ERA over a full season in 2025.
This matchup is far from ideal for Boyd. Arizona led the league in wOBA (.343) and ranked second in wRC+ (119) against left-handed pitching in 2024. Meanwhile, the Cubs were average at best versus southpaws, sitting 16th in both wOBA and wRC+.
Historically, Boyd has struggled against the Diamondbacks as well, holding an 0-2 record with a 6.55 ERA in two career starts.
Arizona’s Offense Has the Edge
The Diamondbacks’ lineup has already shown signs of life in this series. Third baseman Eugenio Suárez has launched multiple home runs, while Josh Naylor continues to be a steady run producer. Add in the dynamic duo of Ketel Marte and Gabriel Moreno, and it’s clear Arizona has the firepower to put pressure on Boyd early and often.
Cubs vs Diamondbacks Elite MLB Pick 3/30
While neither starting pitcher inspires overwhelming confidence, the overall edge leans in Arizona’s favor. Rodriguez appears to be back in form, the Diamondbacks’ offense is well-equipped to handle left-handed pitching, and the Cubs are sending out a question mark in Boyd.
With a nearly even moneyline, Arizona offers value at home. The Diamondbacks are the more complete team right now, and this looks like a great opportunity for them to respond with a strong, all-around performance. Back the Snakes to bounce back.
