Orioles Aim to Regain Offensive Rhythm Against Red-Hot Guardians
The Baltimore Orioles will look to rediscover their offensive identity as they continue their midweek series against the surging Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday night at Camden Yards.
Cleveland opened the series with a 6-3 win Tuesday night, marking their sixth victory in the last seven games. The Guardians’ consistent offense and plate discipline continue to fuel their strong start, improving their record to 9-7—two games above .500 for the first time this season.
Meanwhile, the Orioles have lost five of their last seven contests, struggling to find consistent run support. Baltimore has scored more than three runs in just one of those defeats, a concerning trend for a team that’s capable of much more at the plate.
Guardians Finding Their Groove
In Tuesday’s win, the Guardians tallied 11 hits and drew three walks while striking out only four times. Joey Cantillo pitched in relief and gave up Baltimore’s first run, but continues to show promise as a key piece in Cleveland’s bullpen moving forward.
Steven Kwan has been one of the driving forces behind Cleveland’s success, batting .333 with 21 hits, including three home runs and 11 RBIs. Kyle Manzardo has provided a power boost with four home runs, nine hits, and 11 RBIs, while Nolan Jones leads the team in doubles (3). Several Guardians, including Manzardo, Jones, and Gabriel Arias, are tied for the team lead in strikeouts with 16.
Orioles Seeking Offensive Spark
The Orioles will hope for a bounce-back performance from key bats like Cedric Mullins, who leads the team with 15 hits, four home runs, and 17 RBIs while batting .300. Adley Rutschman has added 14 hits, three homers, and six RBIs, while Ryan Mountcastle and Tyler O’Neill have also contributed solid production.
However, plate discipline has been an issue. Baltimore struck out 12 times on Tuesday and managed just two walks. Young infielder Jackson Holliday, currently batting .213, could return to the lineup after getting a night off.
Pitching Matchup: Kremer vs. Williams
Baltimore will turn to right-hander Dean Kremer (1-2, 8.16 ERA) in hopes of stabilizing things on the mound. Kremer hasn’t pitched since last week’s rough outing against the Diamondbacks, where he allowed six runs in 4 2/3 innings during a 9-0 loss. He’s at least reached the fifth inning in all three of his starts this season but has struggled historically against Cleveland. Kremer is 0-3 with a 6.50 ERA and 10 strikeouts in four career appearances versus the Guardians.
Cleveland counters with righty Gavin Williams (1-0, 3.46 ERA), who is coming off his best start of the season. He tossed five innings of one-run ball with seven strikeouts against the White Sox last Thursday. This will be just his second career start against Baltimore—his first was a rough one last August, when he allowed six runs in four innings.
