Here at Elite Sports Beat my MLB picks have started back up last night. And I started the pick up on a winning note backing the Milwaukee Brewers -106. They won with ease 5-1 and it gave me a $500 profitable evening.
That now makes me 11-5 (68%) +$4,725 this baseball season while being 2-1 (66%) +$1,000 so far in the month of May. Last month I finished 15-10 (60%) +$7,925 overall while also being 7-4 (64%) +$5,530 so far in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Proof of picks can be found here, here and here.
The second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs kicks off Tuesday, May 6, with a marquee matchup between the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes. As the top two teams in the Metropolitan Division, these rivals begin their best-of-seven series in D.C., and all signs point to a tightly contested battle—making this a top-tier Elite NHL Pick for 5/6.
Game 1 Preview: Capitals vs Hurricanes
The Capitals closed out the Montreal Canadiens in five games, while Carolina needed double-overtime in Game 5 to eliminate the New Jersey Devils. Both teams come in rested and relatively healthy, setting up a heavyweight clash.
Despite the playoff stakes, both coaches emphasized consistency over intensity, keeping their focus on systems and execution—just as they did throughout the regular season.
Key Players to Watch
Alex Ovechkin continues to defy age, putting up four goals and an assist in the first round. The 39-year-old NHL all-time goals leader has historically torched Carolina with 52 goals and 107 points in 93 career games—the most he’s scored against any NHL team.
For the Hurricanes, Sebastian Aho is the centerpiece. He delivered 8 points (3G, 5A) in the first round and has a strong track record against Washington with 14 goals and 30 points in 31 games.
Dylan Strome was the Capitals’ most productive forward in Round 1 with 9 points (7 assists), and Carolina’s depth was on full display, with 11 different players scoring against the Devils.
Goaltending Matchup: Thompson vs Andersen
Washington will start Logan Thompson, who returned from injury after missing the end of the regular season. While his playoff resume is limited, Thompson posted a 31-6-6 record with a 2.49 GAA this season. He’s had struggles against Carolina, notably surrendering six goals in a 2023 loss while with Vegas, and leaving early in his only appearance against them this year.
Carolina is expected to go with Frederik Andersen, who missed Game 5 of the first round but is reportedly ready for Game 1. Andersen has solid career numbers against Washington (10-4-3, 2.58 GAA) and adds stability in net.
These teams split the four-game regular season series, with each side winning both contests on home ice. The Capitals edged Carolina 5-4 in a shootout on April 10 in the most recent meeting, a result that could signal just how close this series will be.
