The Tampa Bay Lightning have been a rollercoaster of inconsistency this season, and as they prepare to take on the Pacific Division-leading Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday, they’ll need to bring their best effort to avoid another setback.

Head coach Jon Cooper has voiced his concerns over the team’s erratic play, a troubling trend as they push for positioning in the tightly contested Atlantic Division. Tampa Bay (40-24-5, 85 points) currently trails both the Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs by just two points for first place, but missed a golden opportunity to gain ground after falling to the Utah Hockey Club on Saturday.

Tale of Two Games on the Road

The Lightning opened their three-game road trip on a high note, grinding out a gritty 3-2 shootout victory over the Dallas Stars on Thursday. However, instead of building momentum, they followed it up with a disappointing 6-4 loss in Utah—an all-too-familiar pattern for this unpredictable squad.

Tampa Bay clawed back from multiple deficits in that game, but costly defensive lapses allowed Utah to respond almost immediately. After tying the game at 3-3, the Lightning surrendered another goal just 36 seconds later. Then, when they tied it at 4-4, Utah struck again just 30 seconds later. That lack of defensive focus proved costly, with Nick Schmaltz delivering the knockout punch early in the third period.

The loss came with goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy getting a well-earned night off after starting six of the last seven games. In his place, Brandon Halverson made his first NHL start, stopping 19 of 24 shots.

A Tough Test in Vegas

Things won’t get any easier against the Golden Knights (41-20-8, 90 points), who have been dominant on home ice. Vegas has won seven of its last eight at T-Mobile Arena, where they boast an impressive 26-7-3 record—tying the Dallas Stars for the most home victories in the Western Conference.

The Knights are fresh off a convincing 6-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday, led by Tomas Hertl’s eighth career hat trick. Remarkably, it marked the third consecutive home game in which a Vegas player recorded a hat trick, with Pavel Dorofeyev achieving the feat just two nights prior against the Boston Bruins.

Hertl, who reached the 30-goal milestone with his third tally of the night, admitted that this performance was far more enjoyable than the one he had in a 6-5 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on March 9. This time, the goals translated to a dominant victory—something the Lightning will need to prevent if they hope to avoid another frustrating result.

Tampa Bay has the offensive firepower to compete, but their defensive inconsistencies and tendency to surrender quick goals have been a major issue. With Vegas firing on all cylinders at home, the Lightning will need to tighten up their play if they want to leave Sin City with two points.
