New York Mets vs Houston Astros Preview
As we gear up for the rubber match between the New York Mets and Houston Astros, both teams sit at 1-1 to open the 2025 MLB season. Friday’s 3-1 win by the Mets evened the series, setting the stage for a compelling Sunday showdown. For bettors seeking today’s Elite MLB Pick, this matchup presents an opportunity to capitalize on shaky starting pitching and potentially surging offenses.
New York Mets Offense Needs to Wake Up
The Mets bounced back on Friday with a 3-1 win despite going scoreless after the third inning. All three of New York’s runs came early, including a solo blast from Juan Soto, who went 1-for-3 with a homer and an RBI. Mark Vientos and Jesse Winker each added an RBI to help secure the win.
Tylor Megill was solid on the mound, tossing five innings of one-run ball while giving up just three hits. The Mets bullpen shut the door with four shutout innings to preserve the lead.
Looking back at the 2024 season, the Mets posted a 3.96 team ERA, a 1.26 WHIP, and held opponents to a .230 batting average. Offensively, they plated 768 runs with a .246 team average and a .319 OBP. Pete Alonso led the charge with 34 home runs and 88 RBIs, despite a modest .240 batting average.
Griffin Canning is expected to get the start for the Mets. Canning struggled last season with the Angels, going 6-13 with a 5.19 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP over 171.2 innings. He’ll look for a fresh start in New York, but the matchup isn’t favorable on paper.
Houston Astros Offense Still Waking Up
Houston couldn’t get much going on Friday, managing just three hits and a lone run via Jose Altuve’s sacrifice fly. Altuve was the lone bright spot offensively, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Despite a quality start from Hunter Brown (6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER), the Astros fell short.
The Astros did take Game 1 of the series with a 3-1 win, but their offense has yet to break out in 2025. Last year, Houston’s offense finished with 740 runs scored, a .262 average, and a .322 OBP. Their pitching staff was among the league’s best, finishing with a 3.74 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP.
Today’s projected starter, Spencer Arrighetti, had his ups and downs last year, posting a 7-13 record with a 4.53 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP over 145 innings. Like Canning, he allowed plenty of baserunners and will need to limit damage against a Mets lineup that can strike quickly.
Mets vs Astros Elite MLB Pick 3/29
With both teams splitting the first two games by identical 3-1 scores, Saturday’s finale feels ripe for some offensive regression—in a good way. Neither Griffin Canning nor Spencer Arrighetti inspires much confidence, and both lineups have the capability to exploit subpar pitching.
Given the shaky arms on the mound and the potential for more runs after two low-scoring affairs, my Elite MLB Pick for today is the Over. Expect both teams to finally string together some offense and cash in on a total that’s likely a bit too low.
OVER 8.5 (5*)
5* = $500
10* = $1,000
