The Baltimore Orioles are hotter than a jalapeño in July, boasting a 12-4 record over their last 16 games since May 23. They’ve been winning series like they’re collecting Pokémon cards, and their latest conquest was a 9-2 smackdown of the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday.
Adley Rutschman is playing like he’s got cheat codes activated, going 3-for-5 with six RBIs, including a grand slam that probably left the ball questioning its life choices. He’s hitting .359 since June 1 and .306 overall, with hits in all but two games since May 22. Jordan Westburg and Gunnar Henderson have also been swinging hot bats, contributing to the Orioles’ offensive fireworks.
On the mound, the Orioles’ pitchers have been more reliable than a good Wi-Fi signal, with starters going at least five innings in each game of the current series and the bullpen shutting down opponents tighter than a clam with lockjaw. Grayson Rodriguez was perfect through five innings on Sunday, and Corbin Burnes (6-2, 2.26 ERA) is set to start the series finale, probably planning to leave the Rays batters wondering why they even bothered to show up.
Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Rays are in a slump deeper than my love for procrastination. They’ve lost three straight and 12 of their last 18, plunging to the bottom of the AL East. Offensively, they’ve been outscored 20-5 in the series and 93-57 over the past 18 games. Ryan Pepiot (4-2, 3.96 ERA) will try to stop the bleeding in the final game against the Orioles, but he might want to bring a first aid kit just in case.
