A Battle at the Bottom
Consistency has been a challenge for the Buffalo Sabres, and the Nashville Predators can certainly relate. As both teams prepare to face off on Friday night in Buffalo, they find themselves near the bottom of their respective conferences, searching for a spark to climb the standings.
Currently tied with 43 points, Buffalo sits at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, while Nashville ranks third from the bottom in the West. Despite an 8-7-1 record since their disastrous 0-9-3 slide, the Sabres have only managed back-to-back victories twice this season. However, their recent 7-2 thrashing of the Boston Bruins on Tuesday showcased their offensive potential.
Sabres’ Offensive Outburst
Buffalo’s dominant performance against Boston was powered by Tage Thompson and JJ Peterka, who each recorded a hat trick and an assist. The Sabres matched their season-high for goals in the win, a welcome change after being limited to two or fewer goals in four of their previous seven games.
Thompson has been a bright spot with nine goals and 10 assists in his last 16 games, while Peterka has posted four goals and nine assists in 12 January contests. Despite their offensive strides, Buffalo has struggled against Nashville, losing their last three matchups, including two on home ice.
Predators Looking for Consistency
The Predators, one of the streakiest teams in the NHL, are hoping to bounce back after dropping two straight games. Their recent five-game winning streak demonstrated their capabilities, but Nashville has been plagued by inconsistency. The team has suffered at least two consecutive regulation losses six times this season while managing to string together two or more wins only four times.
After scoring 27 goals during their five-game surge, the Predators have managed just three in their last two contests. In Wednesday’s 3-1 home loss to the Vancouver Canucks, Tommy Novak provided the lone goal despite the team generating 32 shots on net.
Despite recent struggles, the Predators remain optimistic as they embark on a challenging back-to-back road set against Buffalo and Pittsburgh.
Goaltending Questions for Both Teams
Goaltending remains a focal point for Nashville. Juuse Saros made 19 saves on 21 shots Wednesday but has surrendered 11 goals over his last three starts. Backup Justus Annunen, who is 3-0-0 in January despite a 3.00 goals-against average, could see more action in the coming games. Meanwhile, Filip Forsberg had his 10-game point streak (nine goals, 10 assists) snapped in the loss to Vancouver.
Buffalo’s goaltending situation has been more stable. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen has been solid in his last three starts, posting a 2.35 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage. Backup James Reimer has struggled, securing just one win in eight starts since joining the Sabres, though he has turned away 61 of 67 shots in his two January outings.
