Luis Castillo’s Homecoming

Tuesday night in Cincinnati marks more than just the start of a three-game interleague series — it’s the return of a familiar face. Former Reds ace Luis Castillo will take the mound for the Seattle Mariners, making his first appearance against the franchise that developed him into one of baseball’s premier right-handers. Now leading a surging Mariners staff, Castillo squares off against a red-hot Nick Lodolo and a Reds team that has found its rhythm thanks to elite pitching and a recent sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

A Tale of Two Rebuilds

Both Cincinnati and Seattle enter the series at 8-8, riding the momentum of weekend sweeps. The Reds blanked the Pirates 4-0 on Sunday to secure their first sweep of Pittsburgh since 2021, while the Mariners closed out a 5-1 homestand by beating the reigning World Series champion Rangers in back-to-back games.

Castillo’s departure from Cincinnati came during a pivotal moment in the franchise’s rebuild. On July 30, 2022, the Reds traded the right-hander to Seattle in exchange for a quartet of promising prospects. One of those, Noelvi Marte, has already broken into the majors and is starting at third base. Edwin Arroyo remains one of the organization’s top infield prospects, while Andrew Moore continues to develop in the minors. Levi Stoudt, another piece of the deal, has since moved on to the Baltimore system.

Meanwhile, Castillo has delivered on expectations in Seattle. He signed a five-year, $108 million extension, and through three starts this season, owns a 1-1 record with a 2.12 ERA. In his most recent outing, Castillo tossed five shutout innings but earned a no-decision in a tight 2-1 loss.

Reds’ Rotation Among MLB’s Best

Despite losing their ace, the Reds’ pitching staff has turned into a legitimate force. Led by Hunter Greene (2-1, 0.98 ERA) and Nick Lodolo (2-1, 0.96 ERA), Cincinnati ranks third in MLB with a 2.87 team ERA. They’ve won five of their last six games — including three shutouts — and have been riding their rotation while waiting for the offense to click.

Lodolo will take the ball Tuesday night after posting 18.2 innings of elite work over his first three starts. The left-hander has quietly emerged as a frontline starter and now gets a tough assignment against a Mariners team that has started to find its groove.

Mariners Finding Form After Sluggish Start

Seattle’s season began with inconsistency — a split with Oakland, followed by series losses to Detroit and a sweep at the hands of San Francisco. But since then, the Mariners have rebounded impressively, winning series over Houston and Texas.

Their weekend sweep of the Rangers was powered by contributions up and down the lineup. On Saturday, Luke Raley drove in three runs in a 9-2 win, while Bryan Woo delivered seven strong innings. On Sunday, Cal Raleigh launched a two-run homer and Logan Gilbert struck out seven over five solid frames in a 3-1 victory.

The bullpen has also been a major strength. Andrés Muñoz remains perfect in save chances (6-for-6) and hasn’t allowed a single earned run in eight appearances. Relievers Jesse Hahn, Gabe Speier, and Carlos Vargas continue to provide key innings in high-leverage spots.
