Where the Bet Went Sideways: The Second Period

If you watched the game, you felt it — the second period was the story. Minnesota came out of the first in a workable spot, but the middle frame turned into a momentum swing they never fully recovered from. The Wild didn’t manage the puck well, spent too much time defending, and let the Kings control the pace and territory.

The backbreaker was the timing: Minnesota surrendered two goals late in the second period in a short window, and that instantly flipped the script. Instead of playing from a position of strength, the Wild were forced into chase mode. That’s a brutal spot against a team like L.A. that’s comfortable protecting a lead and squeezing the neutral zone.

The Missed Edge: Too Many Power Plays, Not Enough Damage

The Wild had every chance to erase that swing — literally. They went 1-for-6 on the power play, and when you’re handed six opportunities, you need more than one conversion to justify the bet. Even if you don’t score on all of them, those chances have to create momentum, generate rebound looks, and tilt the ice.

Instead, too many possessions died on the perimeter without enough chaos in front. The Kings survived the special-teams test that should’ve been Minnesota’s advantage.

The Goalie Factor: Kuemper Shut the Door Early

Give credit where it’s due: Darcy Kuemper was sharp, stopping 33 shots and keeping Minnesota quiet until the third period. Minnesota didn’t consistently create second chances or sustained net-front traffic, so Kuemper saw pucks cleanly and controlled rebounds.
