Struggling Devils Seek Redemption Against Flyers

The New Jersey Devils are in desperate need of a turnaround as they host the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night in Newark, N.J. Injuries and inconsistent play have put the Devils in a precarious position, inching closer to a wild-card battle rather than the Metropolitan Division lead they once held.

Devils Reeling Amid Injuries and Inconsistency

New Jersey enters Wednesday’s game 4-7-3 in its past 14 contests, a stark contrast to the team that once topped the division standings. Since their 4-2 win over Carolina, the Devils have slipped to third place and could soon find themselves facing a double-digit deficit behind the first-place Washington Capitals, who hold two games in hand.

The injury bug hasn’t helped. Goaltender Jacob Markstrom suffered a sprained MCL last week in a 5-1 victory over the Boston Bruins, leaving the Devils scrambling for stability in net. To make matters worse, captain Nico Hischier—the team’s leading goal-scorer with 24 tallies—was sidelined Monday after taking a cross-check from Montreal’s Nick Suzuki in Saturday’s 4-3 overtime win.

Without Hischier, the Devils struggled offensively in a 4-2 loss to the Flyers on Monday. New Jersey allowed the first three goals of the game before Dougie Hamilton and Timo Meier found the back of the net, but it wasn’t enough. The power play, which had shown signs of life in recent games, went 0-for-3, marking the ninth time since Dec. 27 that the Devils have been held to two goals or fewer.

Flyers Looking to Keep Rolling

The Flyers enter the rematch with confidence, having already won two of three meetings against the Devils this season. Philadelphia has been in solid form, going 6-2-1 in its past nine games following a rough four-game losing skid from Jan. 2-9.

A brief hiccup came last week when the Flyers were outscored 9-2 in back-to-back losses against the New York Rangers and New York Islanders, despite generating a combined 64 shots on goal. However, they bounced back Monday with a 4-2 win over New Jersey, marking the fourth time since Jan. 9 that they’ve put up at least four goals in a game.

Bobby Brink got the Flyers on the board with a power-play goal, while Joel Farabee added another just 28 seconds later. Garnet Hathaway extended the lead early in the second period, and Scott Laughton—playing in his first game back after missing three due to a family emergency—tallied a goal and an assist.

Goaltender Samuel Ersson continued his strong run, stopping 31 shots for the win. Despite a tough outing against the Rangers last week, Ersson has been a steady presence in net, posting an 8-2-0 record with a 1.96 goals-against average (GAA) and a .925 save percentage over his past 10 starts.

Philadelphia played Monday without captain Sean Couturier, who was sidelined due to illness. His status for Wednesday remains uncertain.
