Chicago Cubs vs LA Dodgers Preview
The Chicago Cubs are in unfamiliar territory. Despite averaging a league-best 6.4 runs per game heading into the weekend, the bats went silent on Friday night in a disappointing 3-0 shutout loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. For a team that’s been among MLB’s most explosive offenses to start the season, being blanked on the scoreboard was a harsh wake-up call—and a reminder that timely hitting is never guaranteed, even with solid pitching support.
Looking to stop the skid, the Cubs will hand the ball to Ben Brown. The 24-year-old right-hander is still finding his footing at the Major League level. Sporting a 1-1 record and a bloated 7.71 ERA, Brown is coming off a rocky outing against the Padres where he surrendered seven hits and five earned runs in just four innings of work. While his previous start against Oakland showed flashes of potential—five innings, three earned runs—it’s clear that consistency remains the missing piece for the young arm. With the Cubs offense needing a jolt, a steady performance from Brown could go a long way in restoring some rhythm.
On the other side, the Los Angeles Dodgers continue to prove why they’re one of baseball’s gold standards. Even with a lineup that didn’t need to erupt on Friday, LA made quick work of the Cubs thanks to a big swing from Tommy Edman and a dominant start from Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who tossed six shutout innings of two-hit ball.
The Dodgers now sit at 11-4 on the season and are getting it done despite a laundry list of injuries—13 players are currently on the IL. Still, they rank 9th in MLB in runs scored (4.93 per game) and 10th in runs allowed (3.86 per game), a testament to their depth and discipline on both sides of the ball.
Roki Sasaki gets the nod for LA on Saturday. The highly touted Japanese rookie has a 4.15 ERA across his early outings and is coming off a strong showing against the Phillies, where he allowed just one run over four innings. As Sasaki continues to adjust to Major League hitters, his upside remains tantalizing for Dodgers fans.
