The Reds are worth a look tonight in San Diego, largely because of the edge they appear to have on the mound.
Chase Burns has been one of Cincinnati’s biggest bright spots this season, and this is the type of matchup where his impact can carry extra weight. He brings swing-and-miss stuff, strong run prevention, and the kind of profile that travels well into a pitcher-friendly park like Petco. In a lower-scoring environment, having the better starting pitcher becomes even more important, and Burns gives the Reds a clear advantage in that department.
On the other side, Lucas Giolito has been more vulnerable. He can still miss bats at times, but the overall run prevention has not been as reliable, and Cincinnati should have opportunities to create traffic if it stays disciplined at the plate. The Reds do not need an offensive explosion here; they simply need to scratch out enough support while Burns controls the early innings.
The concern is Cincinnati’s recent form. The Reds have not been playing their best baseball, and backing a road team in a low-total game always comes with some volatility. San Diego also has the home-field edge, and one mistake in this ballpark can swing a tight game.
Still, the price is reasonable enough to side with the better arm. Burns gives Cincinnati the strongest individual advantage in this matchup, and if he pitches to his current form, the Reds should be in position to win a close one.
The play: Reds moneyline.
